Behind the Scenes: Ur Girl

Excuse the overly-cutesy tone. Everything’s explained below! ☆

‘Ur Girl’ is a parody video I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. I had written the lyrics around a year ago but never got a chance to make it happen (I can’t sing for cereals). Luckily, I met & got to know Desiree– and pleasantly discovered she took chorus in high school.

Isn’t she cute?

She wasn’t camera shy despite having no experience with recording. Most people I’ve worked with are ready to call it quits after two hours, but this girl breezed through five. She even wore a sweater in 80-something degree weather and never complained.

The whole shooting process took about a month on and off. I had planned for the video to feature an actual guy, but… sometimes things just don’t work out your way. T_T In the original ending, the guy would’ve picked another girl over the both of us. Everyone would’ve been a winner!

As for the video’s purpose, I wanted to draw attention to this whole “beauty” thing. In particular to Asian women, who are constantly pressured by mass media to improve themselves– wether that means going under the knife (i.e. double eyelid surgery), purposely starving themselves, or whatever else to make themselves look like a doll/model– all of those things seem redundant. Why is it so important to meet this warped version of “perfect” media shows us? Doesn’t anyone think that by chasing after such perfection, we are deriving ourselves of happiness? I think a confident woman is more alluring than a plastic one.

Don’t tell me that nothing can change because it’s set in Asia’s culture. If that’s true, overweight women would still be the ideal. There wouldn’t be any celebrations during Valentine’s Day, Halloween or Christmas. There would be no need for McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King or Pizza Hut. If we can so drastically change thousands of years of culture within a few hundred, isn’t it overdue to redefine beauty?

All in all, I kind of regret not pushing myself further and try to be grossly cute. That would’ve helped get the message across better. Nextimenextimenextime.ヽ(≧Д≦)ノI’ll get better for sure!

P.S. Desiree made our dance routine in five minutes! That’s my excuse for dancing badly. ・∀・
